Kalago Primary School

  • 2017 enrollment: 363 girls, 396 boys

  • Students range from grades 1-7

  • Half the students go to school in the morning and the other half in the afternoon

  • There are 8 class rooms and up to 50 pupils per class

  • Students must have a uniform to attend school; no uniform no school

  • Families buy uniforms from auction market for $52 - $69 or make them from scratch

  • Most students walk 3 – 4 kms to school

  • Most teachers come from neighbouring villages but poor weather often keeps them from arriving on time for classes

  • Students study Swahili, English, math, general social studies, biology, and chemistry

  • Starting at grade 3 students take geography, history, and technology

  • The school has no power so imagine learning science and technology without equipment

Qangded Primary School

  • 2017 enrollment: 550 girls, 540 boys

  • Students range from grades 1-7

  • Grades 1 and 2 go to school in the morning and grades 3 to 7 go in the afternoon

  • There are 13 teachers and 11 classrooms

  • Grade 4 has 100 students

  • Some students walk 8 – 11 km one way to get to school

  • Students study Swahili, English, math, general social studies, geography, history, biology, chemistry, technology and information

  • Uniforms are required but exceptions are made for the children of the Hadzabe and Toga tribes

  • 62 out of 68 grade 7 students continued on to secondary school
